Emeritus Professor of Cardiology Dr. Hein J.J. Wellens studied Medicine at Leiden University. He became Cardiologist in 1967 and defended his PhD thesis “Electrical Stimulation of the Heart in the Study and Treatment of Tachycardias” in 1971 under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Dirk Durrer. In 1973 he was appointed Professor of Cardiology at the University of Amsterdam. In 1977 he became Chairman of the Department of Cardiology at Maastricht University where he stayed until his retirement in 2000. Prof. Wellens is past Medical Director of the Interuniversity Cardiology Institute of The Netherlands and Member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology and the American College of Cardiology. Other Fellowships include the Royal College of Physicians (Edinburgh) and the North American Society of Cardiac Pacing and Electrophysiology (presently Heart Rhythm Society). In 1988 he received a Honorary Doctorate at the University of Liege, Belgium. He is Honorary Member of the Societies of Cardiology of Spain, Argentina, Chile and Switzerland.

Prof. Wellens has delivered several key-note lectures during his distinguished career as an outstanding Cardiologist. The long list includes the 10th George Griffith Lecture of the American Heart Association in 1977, Arvilla Berger Lecture of the New York Cardiological Society 1978, Laurence B. Ellis Lecture of the Harvard Medical School 1981, International Lecture of Society of Cardiology London 1981, Herrick Lecture of Chicago Heart Association 1983 and Andreas Gruntzig Lecture of European Society of Cardiology 1997. He has received several awards as recognition of outstanding service to Cardiology. The list includes Pioneer Award of the Heart Rhythm Society in 1995, the Einthoven Award at Leiden University in 1990, the James B. Herrick Award of the American Heart Association in 1998, the Distinguished Teacher Award of the Heart Rhythm Society in Washington in 2000 and the Life Time Achievement Award of the University of South California, San Francisco in 2000. Prof. Wellens has authored more than 680 international scientific publications and has written 14 books on Cardiology. While being a mentor for numerous doctors and scientists worldwide, he supervised more than 35 PhD projects.
